The interim bail of former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate was extended by the Supreme Court on Monday by five weeks. Senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi, representing for Jain, informed a bench of Justices AS Bopanna and Bela M Trivedi that he had undergone spine surgery on July 21 and would require time to recover.The ED's Additional Solicitor General, SV Raju, stated that he is not opposed to the extension of interim bail.
He stated that the investigation agency wants its application for independent evaluation of Jain by AIIMs or any other hospital hearing on the following date.On July 10, the Supreme Court prolonged Jain's interim bail on medical grounds until July 24.
On May 26, the Supreme Court granted Jain temporary bail for six weeks on medical grounds, stating that a citizen has the right to obtain treatment of his choice at a private hospital at his own expense.
Jain was arrested by the ED on May 30, last year.Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi brought the case before the Supreme Court on Monday, citing Sisodia's wife Seema Sisodia's health. According to ANI, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader sought the Supreme Court on Thursday to protest a Delhi High Court ruling that denied him bail in both CBI and ED cases relating to the Delhi Government's new Excise Policy.He was arrested on February 26 by the Central Bureau of Investigation for his alleged role in the scam and has been detained since then. On May 30, the high court denied him bail in the CBI case.The ED had arrested Jain on May 30 last year on the charge of laundering money through four companies allegedly linked to him. The agency had arrested Jain in the aftermath of a CBI FIR registered against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was granted regular bail by the trial court on September 6, 2019 in the case registered by the CBI.Meanwhile, the top court will hear the bail petition of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on July 14, PTI reported.During the brief hearing, Singhvi submitted that three hospitals have recommended surgery for Jain. The top court on May 26 had granted interim bail to Jain for six weeks on medical grounds, saying a citizen has a right to receive treatment of his choice in a private hospital at his own expense.
